Project
1: The Body, Identity and The Self
Working
title: Be
still and know that I am
The
week 7 will
be accompanied by a laptop and VR headset
What
do you want to do?
You
will need to outline your ideas, inspiration, sources and references.
Start to build up a bibliography of books (artists, writers) that
support your ideas or are in some way linked to your work.
Discuss
the concept of identity, Identity come from two main forms. The self
and The perceived self. I have looked at the writings of .....Nick
Inman
The
self is how you see yourself ( the inside) , The perceived self is
how others see you (the outside).
In
writing you show not tell and in gaming you take it further you do
not show. You provide the experience for someone instead of showing
them the experience. My interest is to provide the opportunity to
partake in an experience. The experience I am exploring the the
connection to the self and the spiritual/divine.
This
piece is to act as a center piece for the kingscliff community
gardens, setting the tone for the space. The intended tone is one of
contemplation, intimacy and spirituality.
Artists
I have looked at are
:
Nam
June Paik (buddah and tv)
Marina
Abramović
(staring lady)
Alberto
Giacometti
(the human figure)
Antony
Gormley (human figure)
Kiki
Smith ( spirituality and otherness)
Artists
recommended by sebastian
Marc
Quinn ( gold kate moss, the divine object)
Gavin
Turk (identity, human figure and manequins)
Janine
Antoni (human form, her own body)
Robert
Gober (religious appropriation)
How
do you plan to go about it?
This
should describe methods, processes and materials. You should identify
where you plan to source these materials and identify processes or
skills you might need to know or learn how to do.
The
intention is to create two low plinths and one human form which are
intended to be visual ques to the concept of identity. On one of the
plinths is a to scale abstracted human form which will be seated.
Acting as a que to discuss the external/projected identity. The empty
plinth discussing the internal/self identity. This empty spot is an
invitation to the viewer to become a participant, in search of their
own "self".
The following are mockups of the positioning of the sculpture
When
do you plan to do it?
This
is to be like a time line that plots out timing for realising the
work. It should identify key points when certain elements, are
required to be finished.
begin
construction of marquette in week 4
experimentation
with materials week 6
review
of artwork in week 7
begin
construction of final in week 8
complete
figure by week 9
complete
installation of work by week 12
Where
do you plan to exhibit the work?
You
will need to experiment with context, placement and location
actively. Don’t wait to think about this when the work is
completed. It should be a component of the ideas of the work from the
start and may influence the realisation of the work dramatically.
ABOVE: site maps for the C3 kingscliff community garden and walking track project, the red area indicates the garden space, the white are indicates the walking track. The sculpture will be installed in the red zone.
There
are two aspects of this work that I need to consider :
The
physicality artwork AND the recording of the artwork for marking
purposes.
The
intention is to continue with the exploration into site specific art
from semester 1. The physical artwork will be located in Kingscliff
NSW.
The
space is multi-purpose and currently under construction but the
intention is to have it completed along with the sculpture. My wife
and I are project managers of the space which has been provided by
C3 Church Kingscliff. The red are of the map is the parklands where
the sculpture is intended for installation with the white space
containing walking tracks and bush BMX track.
The
project consist of:
One

visit
the following link for the progress of the project
http://c3communityparklandandwalkingtrack.blogspot.com.au/
Due
to its location, it will be an interactive artwork, allowing the
visitor to engage with the artwork.
The
space is very close to the pacific highway, there can be is a lot of
highway noise in close to the road but when you are near the creek
side it is quiet.
Some
technicalities
The
owners of the space and local council environmental and planning
division have been contacted in regards to the intention for the
space, and approval for the creation of an artwork has been given by
both parties.
This
was achieved by inital written application and followed by verbal
phone contact to negotiate terms. In particular the council wanted to
know the level of environmental impact on the space, such as removal
of trees and potential clearing
Considerations
for recording the installation
The
record of the artwork will be the final work (for assessment) the
physical artwork will also be accessible to the public.
At
present I am considering the following methods to display the final
artwork. And may use a combination of the following:
Photographs
3D
photographs /w the bubble camera (show photo IMAGE 6)
2D
video
Interactive
3D /w video Youtube 360 vids
Interactive
media
What
are the Risks?
There
are risks of some sort with virtually all artwork. Consider what the
risks might be in developing your project. The risks might be about
storage and safety of work, it might be about the impact of the work
on other students using the studio, as well as the safety of the
materials you are using. It is important that you develop a sense of
individual responsibility for establishing safe working conditions
for yourself, and ensuring what you do does not impact negatively on
the other users of the workshop and studio.
working
with concrete dust and steel will be dangerous to bystanders and
myself.
the
work will be constructed and presented in a public space so will need
to be secured to the ground for exhibition, and fenced off for
construction
suitable
protection ie ventilator, gloves and full cover clothing will be
needed
